About
A truck, the symbol of the American dream of freedom, is an indicator of social status and a must-have if one wants to travel through endless landscapes of the USA. There is a competition in one of the small towns in Texas. The rules are simple: twenty participants stand around the reward – a blue pick-up truck. Each of them places their hand on the vehicle. The person who endures the longest gets the reward. Every hour there is a five-minute break, and every six hours – a fifteen-minute break. The participants start to feel as if they were in a horror film. Among them there is Kyle. He wants to prove his wife and son that in spite of poverty he is able to provide for his family.
Do you remember Sydney Pollack’s They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? There, too, was a competition governed by cruel rules whose high prize was seductive. Based on true events, One of These Days is a bitter comment on the American pursuit of money. When the participants start to hallucinate, we can no longer be sure of what is real, and what is just their imagination. It is a universal opinion about the contemporary inequality of opportunity and unfulfillable dreams of the consumerist society.
