About
After watching „Back Home”, what stays in memory is above all the vision of a French countryside – supposedly sunny and full of life, but deep inside oppressive, bulging with conflicts and disputes. The contrast is well represented in Niels Schneider’s character: the actor, usually cast as a lady-killer, in Jessika Palud’s film is permanently tired, sad, and worried. Schneider is cast as Thomas who comes back to his family home and a dying mother after many years only to discover that he is awaited by dark secrets and sinister understatements. And yet, in this world of disturbingly vivid colours, enigmatic conversations, and hostile glares, the main character manages to find an opportunity to make the return to his old life the beginning of a new one.
When he finds out that his mother is dying, Thomas returns after many years to his family village in South-eastern France. Soon it turns out that the broken relationships will be extremely difficult to repair, but, to his surprise, there emerges an opportunity to create completely new ones.
