About
“Anne at 13,000 ft” is a loosely connected sequence of episodes from the life of a young woman (Deragh Campbell) who lives in Toronto and is a professional nursemaid. The film presents the woman’s everyday life: her family and social relations, a burgeoning romance, the trials and tribulations in the work environment. A seemingly casual narrative gradually reveals the iron core – a story about a sensitive person who is thirsty for intimacy and who can’t and doesn’t want to live up to the expectations imposed on her by society.
By presenting the characters virtually only in close-ups and with a hand-held camera, the filmmakers drastically reduce the distance and fill the film with intense emotions which are distinguishable thanks to the rich spectrum of facial expressions and body language of the cast. The stream of impression consistently builds Anne’s portrait, who is a female version of Peter Pan: emotional, gifted with vivid imagination, thirsty for flying and rebelled against the compulsory growing old. The means of expression which enable perception and sharing of experiences make Radawanski’s film a perfectly tuned instrument of cinematic empathy.
