About
The eleven-year-old Emma has her entire world turned upside down when her father declares that he wants to undergo a sex change surgery. After Thomas becomes Agnete, the father and the daughter both struggle to maintain status quo while accepting everything that has changed. The girl, who is just growing up, suddenly finds her father alien: he’s no longer interested in their favourite football – instead, he starts wearing dresses. Therapy sessions and going on trips together prove futile in helping to understand the situation. How is the teenage girl supposed to deal with her private earthquake?
Malou Reymann’s debut presents complex family relations in an intimate and poignant way. The director is more than familiar with the story told in “A Perfectly Normal Family”. She grew up next to his transsexual father, which is why she has intertwined her film with family VHS recordings. The film provides a mature insight into contemporary sexuality, the changing world and an answer to the question of what is the today’s meaning of normality.
