A versatile multi-media composer whose work spans a broad range from music for motion pictures and television to the concert stage, Bruce Broughton composes in a wide variety of styles in many musical environments. His first major film score, a broad orchestral canvas for Lawrence Kasdan’s western Silverado, brought him an Oscar nomination. His very next assignment, a classically styled score for Barry Levinson’s Young Sherlock Holmes, resulted in a Grammy nomination for the soundtrack album. Broughton has composed the scores to such major motion pictures as Lost in Space, Tombstone, Miracle on 34th Street, Carried Away, Baby’s Day Out, The Presidio, Narrow Margin, Harry and the Hendersons, The Boy Who Could Fly, the Disney animated features The Rescuers Down Under and Bambi II, as well as the two popular Homeward Bound adventures. In a lighter vein he wrote the effervescent music for Krippendorf’s Tribe, as well as the comedy hit, Honey, I Blew Up the Kid! He conducted and supervised the recording of Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue for Fantasia 2000. With 22 nominations, he has received the Emmy award ten times, a record in the category of Best Music Composition. His most recent Emmys were for the scores to Warm Springs for HBO. His television credits include the main title themes for JAG, Tiny Toon Adventures and Dinosaurs and scores for television series ranging from Dallas to Hawaii Five-O, movies for television such as Eloise at the Plaza, Eloise at Christmastime, Bobby’s Girl and O Pioneers! as well as the miniseries Roughing It, The Blue and the Gray and the Emmy Award-winning True Women. His score for Heart of Darkness was the first orchestral score composed for a video game. The Cleveland Orchestra, the Chicago Orchestra, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, The Seattle Symphony, the National Symphony and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra have performed his concert works, among them two popular concertos -- one for piccolo, another for tuba.
As a conductor, aside from numerous soundtrack recordings from his own films, his recordings of Miklós Rózsa\'s Ivanhoe and Julius Caesar for Intrada records, performed by the Sinfonia of London shortly before the composer\'s death, have received rave reviews, as has his recording of Bernard Herrmann\'s unique wind instrumentation for Jason and the Argonauts. Broughton is a board member of ASCAP, a former governor of both the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Academy of Television
Arts and Sciences, and a past president of The Society of Composers and Lyricists. He teaches graduate music composition and orchestration at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, and music composition in the USC Thornton School of Music, as well as orchestration for USC’s Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television program.
