Presenting winners of the Berlin International Film Festival has already become a tradition of Transatlantyk. It won’t change this year, especially that Fuocoammare touches upon the main topic of this year’s edition – the problem of refugees and current European migration crisis. For thousands of African refugees, a small Lampedusa island located off the Italian coast is the place of their first contact with Europe. Those who escape their countries to seek better future for themselves and their children arrive here every year. Gianfranco Rossi portraits the everyday life of Lampedusa inhabitants, who try to live their life normally right next to the tragedy that happens around them each day. However, he does not run away from the topic of refugees. Instead, he listens to their dramatic stories – they have experienced a lot while fleeing to Europe from never ending bombings and warfare. On many occasions, the hardships of the very journey exhausted them so much that they reached Lampedusa badly drained. The director presents the everyday reality of the island’s inhabitants, for whom providing help for the refugees has become a standard and unquestionable part of life. They do not protest, do not fight against anything, do not ask whether someone is a refugee or an economic migrant; they do not divide people into these who “have the right” to escape and these who are not entitled to do so. They see people in need and bring them help – not much and at the same time a lot.
